Side note: In all my years in senior school, I had THE BEST english teacher ever. We also studied a lot of books and so many films. She basically brainwashed us with correct way to structure and word things such as reviews etc. So I do apologise in advance if I do slip back into those habits but I'm going to try my damn hardest not to!
The Book
When the first book was released in 2011 I was only 14. I remember my mum and all her friends reading it and going on about the infamous Christian Grey. I begged and begged and begged my mum to let me read the books, but she basically had them under lock and key. Little did she know that most of the books I was already reading, 50 Shades did not even come close to their kind of raunchiness. But I was yet to figure that out myself.
It wasn't until 2014 when it was announced that there'd be a film, that I actually decided to just go out and buy all the books and just get it over and done with. I had no idea what I was in for.
Now, I am an extremely avid reader so I have ready many many books. Some good. Some bad. And some just plain weird. Given this, the only problem I had with the books is that, yes they are extremely compelling, but the actual writing and structure of them was quite poor. This is most definitely the nerd in me showing itself, so lets move on!
The actual story and plot itself was hard not to love. I mean, who honestly would complain about a drop dead sexy billionaire stalking after them? Certainly not me. E. L. James definitely knows how to draw you in with the characters and their emotions and back stories. She keeps you wanting more which is the absolute number 1 thing I look for when reading a book. And in the grand scheme of things, who cares if the book isn't expertly written, coz if Christian Grey is in it, that is 100% the main focus!
The Film
When it first hit the big screens, I was quite shocked to hear that it was getting such bad reviews. I wondered how such a huge profitable book that was turned into a film could really be as much of a dive as everyone was saying it was. After seeing it for myself, I came up with categories that each critic that gave it a bad review would fall in:
- The old prude
- The overly technical film critic
- The one who hasn't read the book
- and the one who read the book and loved it so much that anything else came second best.
Long story short, I LOVED IT! I absolutely adored their choices on who to cast as Anastasia and Christian. Looking back now, I don't think they could've chosen 2 better people and I honestly cannot even picture it being someone else. The only casting choice I didn't approve of was Christians brother, Elliot. I definitely pictured a way more attractive person in my head, but he's still nice to look at!
I loved it that much, I ended up seeing it 3 times at the cinema. No, I'm not a weird porno obsessed person. It's just, the first 2 times I saw it, it was very hard to focus on the actual movie due to all the boobs, butts, abs and Jamie Dornan. Just saying. I genuinely don't think it was as bad as everyone made it out to be. I mean, if we're going to be technical, it wasn't the best movie. But it wasn't about the technicalities, which I think a lot of people forgot. It was about a very risqué, scandalous book finally being put on the big screen so fans can put faces to names and finally get a visual sense of things.
The only things I would critique it on was the fact that there were a lot of holes in the plot. There was lots missing from the book and there was quite a few events backwards in the film compared to how they were in the book. I know, I know. If directors and producers were to follow the book chapter by chapter, the film would be horrendously long. But I do feel as though they could've extended it the tiniest bit to do the book and E.L. James the justice they deserve.
All in all, I would rate the books a solid 11/10, coz you know, Christian Grey. Enough said.
And I would give the film, probably a 9.999999/10, coz you know, Christian Grey/Jamie Dornan and his butt.
If you're a female, I would highly recommend reading the book and seeing the film because 1- who doesn't love a good romance? and 2- It's definitely very sexually awakening!
If you're male, just watch the movies. There's boobs and stuff.
